Scientists at Whitehouse Surgery in the U.K. looked at 101 people who suffered from stress. The subjects took 400 mg a day of rhodiola for four weeks. They experienced significant stress relief.4

Another study at Sweden’s Uppsala University tested rhodiola’s effect on fatigue. Over four weeks, 60 subjects with fatigue took a daily dose of either 576 mg of rhodiola or a placebo.5

The rhodiola group had less fatigue compared to the placebo group.

But rhodiola’s health benefits don’t stop there. The herb may also have potential for treating cancer. In vitro (test tube) experiments have shown rhodiola inhibits growth and prompts apoptosis (cell death) in liver cancer cells.6

The same has been found in studies for breast, colon, and bladder cancer.7

Rhodiola also may help control diabetes. A study of diabetic rats showed the herb lowers blood sugar by boosting the amount of glucose transporters in their blood. This moves glucose out of the bloodstream and into cells.8

And the herb can boost exercise performance.

The Gettysburg College Department of Health Sciences had subjects run a six-mile simulated race on stationary bikes. An hour beforehand, half the subjects were given rhodiola. The others were given a placebo. The rhodiola group consistently finished faster than the placebo group.9
