I’m always looking at the latest supplement studies. And I have to tell you that I’ve rarely seen such strong evidence as what I’ve been reading about maca root.
Maca originated in Peru. Indigenous people started cultivating it about 2,000 years ago. Farmers noticed maca seemed to boost energy and fertility in their livestock. Soon after, people started consuming it themselves.
But maca didn’t begin to catch on outside of Latin America until just a few years ago. And scientists are starting to discover that it may be one of the best supplements for staying energetic and vital as you get older.[i]
Here are some examples of evidence…
- Boosts libido. A study published in the journal Andrologia gathered male participants. Researchers gave maca daily to some of the subjects. They gave a placebo to the rest. After eight weeks, the maca group had stronger sexual desire.[ii]Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital tested maca in women. The subjects had experienced sexual dysfunction as a side effect of taking antidepressants. Scientists gave half the women 3,000 mg of maca daily. They gave the others a placebo. After 12 weeks, the maca group reported improvement in sexual desire.[iii]
- Reduces depression. The study was published in the journal Climacteric. Depression patients were given either maca or a placebo. After 12 weeks, the maca group experienced relief from depression symptoms. They also had lower blood pressure.[iv]
- Boosts energy. Britain’s Northumbria University had bicyclists complete a 25-mile race. After that, researchers gave the subjects maca or a placebo daily for two weeks. Then cyclists then repeated the same race. Those who took maca had much improved times. They also reported increased sexual desire.[v]
- Reduces prostate size. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common problem for men. This is when the prostate becomes enlarged. It can lead to increased urge to urinate and difficulty emptying the bladder. This can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep because of constant bathroom trips. Several studies have found that maca reduces prostate size.[vi] [vii] [viii]
Maca supplements are available in three forms: capsules, liquid, or powder. It is available from online retailers or health food stores.
Maca is safe. But consult with your doctor before taking it if you have thyroid problems. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also check with their physician.
All these benefits, and the research is just getting started. Maca can help you feel better, even as you get older.
