What is the biggest killer in the U.S.?
A good guess is heart disease. It takes some 640,000 American lives every year.
Cancer, of course, is also extremely deadly. It kills about 600,000 annually.
Alzheimer’s costs 120,000 Americans their lives every year and diabetes takes about 80,000 of us.[i]
But none of these is the biggest killer…
Chronic inflammation is.
It’s the root cause of all these deadly conditions.
Harvard University researchers go even further. They say inflammation may cause all illness. They call it the “unifying theory” of disease.[ii]
How can you stop inflammation? One of the best ways is a supplement called MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). Researchers have found it reduces a wide range of inflammation markers.
A study from The University of Memphis looked at 40 physically active men.
Researchers randomly assigned half of the subjects to take 3,000 mg of MSM. The other half took a placebo.
The MSM group had decreased levels of inflammatory proteins.[iii]
Animals studies also show the powerful anti-inflammatory effects of MSM. Research published in the European Journal of Pharmacology tested the supplement in mice.
The MSM worked in two ways: It inhibited inflammatory proteins and increased glutathione. Glutathione is known as the “master antioxidant.” It fights the free radicals that cause inflammation.[iv] [v]
Laboratory testing shows MSM reduces tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). These are signaling proteins that promote systemic inflammation.[vi]
Researchers have found that MSM relieves two conditions that are directly caused by inflammation:
- A study from the Genesis Center for Integrative Medicine gathered 50 allergy sufferers. Researchers gave them 2,600 mg of MSM a day.
After 30 days, they had less sneezing, itching, coughing, congestion, and shortness of breath. They also reported better energy levels.[vii]
- Rosacea. It’s a common skin condition that causes facial redness and inflamed blood vessels. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology looked at 46 rosacea patients.
Researchers gave some a topical MSM. The others used a placebo lotion. The MSM group had improved symptoms…less redness, itching, and inflammation.[viii]
MSM is well-tolerated with minimal side effects. Studies have found that you can safely take up to 4,800 mg a day.
In rare cases, people who are sensitive to MSM may experience nausea, diarrhea, and bloating.
You can get MSM supplements from online retailers and at health food stores.
We need to fight chronic inflammation however we can…and MSM is one of the best weapons in the natural-supplements arsenal.
