The Chinese Superfood for Your Eyes

People often ask me what they can do to stop their eyesight from declining as they get older.

It’s a good question.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the number one cause of blindness in older adults. It’s caused by deterioration of the macula…the central part of the retinas.[1]

The macula is responsible for your direct line of vision. It’s needed for seeing details, reading, driving, recognizing faces, etc.

There’s no cure for AMD. So it’s important to do what you can to prevent it.

Goji berries are one of the best natural enemies of AMD.

This tiny red fruit is native to China. It has been used there in traditional medicine for more than 2,000 years. It’s considered a “superfood” because it contains an abundant array of vitamins and minerals. It’s also higher in protein than most fruit.

Goji berries are rich in plant pigments called carotenoids… especially zeaxanthin and lutein. Both are known to prevent or slow progression of AMD.

A study published in the journal Optometry and Vision Science tested goji berries in 150 seniors who were at risk for AMD. Researchers gave half a goji supplement. They gave the other half a placebo. After 90 days, the placebo group had some deterioration in the macula. This is a symptom of AMD progression.

The subjects taking goji had no macula deterioration.[2]

3 Other Ways Goji Berries Improve Your Health

Research shows that goji berries also:

  • Relieves sunburn. A study from Australia’s University of Sydney found that drinking goji berry juice reduces inflammation from sunburn. Other studies have found that goji berries inhibit skin cancer.[3]
  • Boost mood and energy. As reported in the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine, researchers gave subjects a daily dose of goji berry juice. After two weeks, the volunteers reported increased energy. They also had an improved sense of “general well-being,” better sleep quality, and reduced stress. A placebo group did not.[4]
  • Fight aging. A review of goji studies published in Drug Design, Development, and Therapy found the antioxidants in goji berries fight diseases of aging.[5]

You can find goji berries in the produce section of many grocery stores. Goji juice and supplements in capsule form are available online and from health food stores.

Goji berries are safe for most people. But you should avoid them if you take blood thinners, have low blood sugar, or have blood pressure issues.

Keeping your vision strong is a vital part of healthy aging. Goji berries are a proven way to keep your eyesight sharp into your 70s, 80s, and beyond.
