I had lunch with a doctor friend of mine recently. He told me something shocking.
I asked him what his patients’ number-one health complaint was.
I expected him to say chronic pain… Or maybe obesity… Or depression.
The problem most mentioned by my friend’s patients is none of these.
“You’d be amazed at how many people go through the day feeling totally worn out,” he said.
That’s when I told him about a supplement that works wonders for me. It’s coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).
It’s a compound that is stored in the mitochondria of every cell in your body. It is necessary for generating energy.
Your body produces CoQ10 naturally. Your levels peak at around age 21. But they drop as much as 65% by the time you hit 80. With less CoQ10, fatigue can become a fact of life.[i]
Researchers have found that supplementation can compensate for lower CoQ10 production.
- A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research had subjects do regular workouts. One group took CoQ10 supplements. The other was given a placebo.
The CoQ10 group experienced significant relief from fatigue compared to the placebo group.[ii]
CoQ10 has other important health benefits…
- Cancer protection. Cancer patients are known to have lower CoQ10 levels. One study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention looked at more than 1,000 Chinese women. The researchers found higher CoQ10 levels were associated with lower breast cancer risk.Another study from Rome’s Catholic University of the Sacred Heart found lower rates of recurrence of melanoma in patients given CoQ10.[iii] [iv]
- Protection against diabetes. A study from Cairo’s National Research Center found that CoQ10 improved insulin sensitivity in diabetic rats.Another study published in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders looked at subjects with type 2 diabetes. For 12 weeks, some were given CoQ10 while the others were given a placebo. At the study’s end, the CoQ10 group had had much lower fasting-glucose and A1C levels.[v] [vi]
- Youthful skin. A study from the Paul Gerson Unna Research Center in Hamburg, Germany, found CoQ10 applied topically reduced skin wrinkles. The scientists concluded that the compound can combat the skin-aging effects of sunlight.[vii] [viii]
CoQ10 can be purchased from nutrition stores and online. It’s available in pills as well as in creams and lotions for applying to the skin.
So if you’re getting up there in years, don’t deprive yourself of the unique benefits CoQ10 can provide.
